Walkie Talkie Variations

Three walkie-talkie variations I textured for a class assignment. All texturing done in Substance Painter. Original model is created by Christopher Turner.

Bloody Walkie

For my first walkie-talkie texture, I wanted to keep it classic, since the orange walkie is a staple that everyone recognizes. However, I also wanted to create some environmental storytelling with the blood splatters. This little device has been through a lot!
I was greatly inspired by the survival horror genre for this piece, specifically something like The Forest, which includes a lot of environmental storytelling. This is also the type of walkie-talkie I am most familiar with visually, so I thought I'd start here.

Camo Walkie

The second texture I created for this walkie was based on a slightly different genre. While most of the details are still similar, I wanted to give this one more of an army-inspired style, hence the camouflage. The surface is also dirtier and more weathered, conveying the idea that this walkie had been used for a little while before the player initially sees it. I also added a small detail of a clean mark across the dirty screen, as though someone had wiped it away with their finger to see clearer.
I actually didn't use any reference images for this walkie-talkie! I wanted to keep what I had made with the classic one, and instead play around with wear and tear.

Hello Kitty Walkie

I wanted to go a completely different direction for the third texture, so I decided on something cute. I found some adorable reference images of little Hello Kitty walkies, and decided to base this texture off of them. To convey some wear and tear as if a child had loved this toy, I dirtied the surface slightly and gunked up the small cracks. I also added a faux inset screen and multiple worn Hello Kitty stickers to really sell the quirkiness and childlike charm of this walkie.
Reference images I used can be seen to the right!
